Monitoring system in the English Channel
Frédérique Turbout
The English Channel is one of the world's busiest maritime thoroughfare. More than a quarter part of goods traffic pass through this maritime corridor. In 2006, around 500 ships per day report to the CROSS (Jobourg, Corsen or Gris-Nez) and the 5 MRCCs, as they enter or leave the Channel. Furthermore, 120 ferry rotations take place daily on the cross-Channel routes. To this intense commercial traffic should be added fishing vessels, feedering, and sailing boats. To ensure the safety of this area and avoid accidents, more than 50 lighthouses are active all along the coastline and at sea. They complete a monitoring of the English Channel with the CROSS and MRCCs. This maritime safety scheme is one of the most effective in the world.
